(RALEIGH) -- North Carolina voters have approved a constitutional amendment defining marriage solely as a union between a man and a woman, making it the 30th state to adopt such a ban. Tami Fitzgerald with the group Vote for Marriage NC says this was the right choice.

“The whole point is you don’t simple rewrite the nature of God’s design based on the demands of a group of adults,” said Fitzgerald, who also thanked supporters including the Rev. Billy Graham, who was featured in full page newspaper ads the weekend before the vote.

Opponents of the ban said they are not done with the fight.

“Tonight is disappointing,” said Jeremy Kennedy with the Coalition to Protect All NC Families. “You have a right to feel angry. You have a right to feel said. You have a right to feel hurt.” Opponents also had some powerful voices on their side, including former President Bill Clinton who recorded a robo-call in the final days of the campaign.

State Attorney General Roy Cooper said he was voting against the amendment, and that he believes it will be hard to defend it in court.
