Hendersonville -- This holiday weekend, thousands will lace up hiking boots and head out onto North Carolina's miles of hiking trails.  One, relatively new, program is hiring young people to help expand the state's trail network on North Carolina's conservation lands. Henderson County celebrated the opening of a new trailhead in Hickory Nut Gorge. Henderson County Chamber of Commerce President Bob Williford says the added recreation can often be a deal 'maker' to bring new employers to the county.

Willford said, "It makes the community an attractive place. If they've got an interest here, and they see how strong the quality of life is and the amenities that we have. It makes it much easier for us to close that deal."

A portion of the trail was built by the North Carolina Youth Conservation Corps. In its second year, the group is made up of 16-to-24-year-olds who work and camp together on five-to-seven-week outdoor conservation projects. They've also worked in state parks in the coastal plain, northwestern mountains, and the Triangle region.
