ALBEMARLE -- Police say a student was shot after an argument at Albemarle High School just before school began Tuesday.
Albemarle Police Chief William Halliburton said, "At approximately 7:40 this (Tuesday) morning we received a call from the high school, referencing shots being fired. We had officers on the scene within minutes. Found one person had been shot. Had a suspect in custody immediately."
Halliburton says the student who fired the shots put down his gun and waited for police. The wounded student was shot in the lower extremities. His condition wasn't released. The chief says the shooting happened in a campus courtyard minutes before classes started. Investigators don't know what the argument was about. Police don't think any other students were involved but they are still interviewing witnesses.
