RALEIGH -- We're learning more about a study that has sparked debate, by ranking North Carolina the -- worst -- state for teachers. WalletHub used a series of factors for a state by state ranking and determined North Carolina was last overall. Spokesperson Jill Gonzalez says that one area of concern is safety.

According to Gonzalez, "Almost 10% of public school teachers reported that they were threatened with injury, by a student, in recent years."

She says North Carolina spends about $1,300 per student per year -- which is about fourth from the bottom. The recent General Assembly approved a pay increase they argue is up to 7% for teachers, but teacher groups argue the pay plan favors newer teachers over those who have been in the classroom longer.
