RALEIGH -- The first same-sex marriage in Wake County took place just before 6 P.M. on Friday evening.

The ruling was handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Max O. Cogburn, Jr. just after 5 P.M. The ban, which was approved in 2012, was declared unconstitutional. Many offices remained open late to begin issuing marriage licenses to waiting couples.
