RALEIGH - Most North Carolinians know Steve Troxler as the state's agriculture commissioner. But for the past semester, Troxler has been teaching a course on agriculture at NC State as an adjunct professor and he says he enjoyed the experience.

"There were 30 students in the class, and including a few military veterans who were studying agriculture, amazingly there were several students who were actually going back home to the farm to continue their careers in agriculture," Troxler says in an interview with SFNToday.com. "So it was very gratifying."

Troxler taught the course alongside Richard Linton, the dean of NC State's School of Agriculture and Life Science, and says they tried to teach the course a little differently.

"The dean and I tried to give them a taste of what the real world is about and things they wouldn't see," Troxler says. "We covered a variety of topics pertaining to agriculture, agriculture policy, economic development and international trade."

And in this semester course, Troxler says he did as little teaching in the classroom as possible.

"We actually go them out. One of the trips was to the legislative building for them to understand the legislative process," he says. "We took them to RTP, we went to research facilities so wanted to get them out into the real world of agriculture and agri-business."

Troxler says both he and Linton had not taught in a while and fed well off of one another.

"In the future, I can guarantee you that I will be back to teach again but it all depends on my schedule. I'm not in as much national leadership now," he says. "I would even like to expand this. The dean and I have talked about doing a traveling roadshow where we try to reach students at other universities."

Agriculture is the largest industry in North Carolina, bringing more than $70 billion to the state last year.
