RALEIGH -- The state's tenth reported railway crossing death Wednesday is a stark reminder about the need for safety at such crossings.
On Wednesday with the state's tenth reported railroad track death in Mount Olive. There were 20 such deaths in all of 2014.
Lanny Wilson, who lost his daughter in a crossing incident, reminds people of the illusion that makes trains appear farther than they actually are. "Approaching a railroad track means that you have to be cautious even if you don't see a train. It's often time the train that you don't see that kills," says Wilson.
Wilson says all of these deaths can be prevented as he begins his new awareness campaign See Tracks? Think Train! to promote a safer initiative around railroad tracks.
"It's our hope that we'll have zero fatalities, we think that's a reality because most of these are preventable, but at least North Carolina is heading in the right direction." he says.
"Just simply obeying the rules when you're out there will save so many lives," he adds.
