RALEIGH-- Relatively low gas prices are attracting many North Carolinians to drive to their July 4th holiday destinations.  AAA Carolinas spokesperson Tiffany Wright says the N.C. State Highway Patrol has already begun its "Booze it and Lose it" campaign targeting drunk drivers.

She says drivers can face other dangerous interruptions.

"Our researchers show that distracted driving including those practices we're talking about  being on your cell phones can have the same effects and be just as deadly as drunk driving. So we want to stress to eliminate as many distractions behind the wheel such as texting," she says.

But Wright says there are more driving distractions that just texting.

"That also includes eating while you're driving, that includes putting on makeup, trying to address your kids in the back seat turning away from the wheel. All of those things are all part of distractions and we need to eliminate as many of those as we can," she says.

Wright says before you hit the road drivers should get a check up on their car. She says you should make sure your tires and windshield wipers are in good condition.

She says most roads will post pone construction, but you can visit nc.dot for any closures.
