GREENSBORO – Former Congressman Howard Coble of the Triad died late Tuesday after an extended hospital stay. He was 84.

Coble served in Congress for 30 years, the longest serving member in state history.

His nephew, Ray Coble, released a statement saying: "J. Howard Coble died at 11:40pm last night after an extended hospitalization. The family would like to thank Select Specialty Hospital of Greensboro and Dr. Ali Hajazi for his excellent care. The community will be notified of his funeral arrangements when complete."

Coble was admitted to the hospital in early September for surgery to remove skin cancer lesions and a lymph node.

His nephew said that not long after the procedure, he developed complications with his breathing and was unable to swallow. He was put on a ventilator.

In addition to serving in Congress, Coble was also North Carolina Secretary of the Department of Revenue from 1973-77. He was the assistant U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of North Carolina from 1969 until 1973. Coble served multiple terms in the North Carolina House of Representatives. He began public service by enlisting and serving in the United States Coast Guard from 1952 until 1956. From 1960 until 1982, Coble served in the Coast Guard Reserve.

A number of leaders and dignitaries have sent regards, among them.

"We are deeply saddened to learn of Congressman Howard Coble's passing today, but we are at peace knowing he is in a better place," the statement read it part. "Our community was blessed to have had his leadership in Washington for thirty years, but we were even more blessed to call him a friend and mentor."  -- Congressman Mark Walker, who currently holds the seat once occupied by Coble.

With the passing of Howard Coble, North Carolina not only lost a wonderful public servant and congressmen, but our state also lost a friend and mentor to so many, including myself. He was a friend who was genuine, hardworking, sincere and honest. We will all miss our friend, but we'll never forget him and the good things he did for our country, our state and so many of us individually. Ann and I will keep the Coble family in our prayers during this difficult time.” – N.C. Governor Pat McCrory.

“Howard Coble was a friend, colleague and a mentor. He was a true statesman and represented his constituents with passion and effectiveness. Howard will be missed but never forgotten by all who called him friend. It’s a sad day for North Carolina but it is a joyous occasion that Howard is once again with his parents he loved so much.” – U.S. Sen. Richard Burr.
