CHAPEL HILL --  An Elon University football player has died in a fall at the UNC-Chapel Hill Morrison Residence Hall. The player was identified as junior Demitri Allison in an open letter posted on the Elon University website.

Allison was the son of Mark and Lisa Hartman of Cornelius, N.C. Demitri was majoring in management and was a wide receiver on the Elon Phoenix football team, according to Elon’s Vice President for Student Life Smith Jackson.

According to law enforcement officers, Allison died Wednesday afternoon after falling from the 10-story building. He had left the Elon campus yesterday and his teammates, friends and family asked police to look for him because they were concerned for his well-being and emotional state.

“Everyone associated with Elon athletics is devastated,” said Athletics Director Dave Blank. “Demitri was a talented young man with a bright future who was loved by his teammates. We mourn his loss deeply and we pray for his family and loved ones.”

Elon was planning a gathering at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in Rhodes Stadium for students, faculty, staff, and community members.
The school is also providing counseling for students who need it.
